the New York Sign Museum
The work we do here at The New York Sign Museum has no end date. It is ongoing, constantly evolving and never stopping. Our main sources of funding, tour tickets, merchandise sales, and educational workshops, help tremendously in keeping the museum running. However the cost of running this museum can add up wildly. From a sign deinstall that switches from an afternoon job to a three day project, to the upgrading of professional equipment to better document our ephemera, donations from the public can tremendously help us achieve our goals. If you were curious about how your donation directly contributes to our cause, we’ve broken that down below:
- $1-$50: Keeping the lights on. Small donations like this help pay for basic operating costs of the museum, such as storage and transportation
- $51-$500: Upgrades and acquisitions: if you’ve been on our tours, you’ve heard us talk about our growing ephemera and book library. Donations at this level not only help us grow our collection of print materials, advertising objects, small signs, and more, but they also let us upgrade our technical equipment to digitize and document what we already have. Digitization is a large project that requires a lot of time and effort, and the task is far less daunting once we secure top-quality equipment to get the job done.
- $500-$2500+: Saving signs. People often ask how we get our signs. While some are graciously donated to the museum having been already removed from the building they were on, the majority of signs we get we take down ourselves after conversations with the business or building owners. Sometimes this means two of us getting on a ladder, removing some screws, taking down the sign, all in a few minutes. And sometimes it means a crew of over five people on rented boom lifts over several days in challenging conditions. Sign saves can get pricey quickly. Large donations directly help us save signs from around the tri-state area, allowing us to worry less about the monetary burden of the sign save cost and focus on saving the best signs possible for the collection.
We greatly appreciate any and all donations to the museum. The museum would not be running without the help from people like you, so we sincerely thank you for your support.
